We have always believed in knowledgeable in birth as the safest place for mother to welcome her baby, for a family to welcome their newest member. This rationale is not just because of the reduced stress of being home, but because birth is a physiological role and the body can do it without medical assistance. To clarify, we believe that a mother should ask for medical interventions, that they should never be forced upon her. There is also much evidence supporting the argument that medical interventions (during origin especially) are creating far more risk than necessary for women who could otherwise give birth unhindered. The body knows what to do. We must trust. With our first pregnancy, we did self-care and went full basis, 40 weeks + 4 days. We had fully intended on a free birth in our tiny apartment in the mountains. However, I needed a few valuable lessons, and it was part of my kismet to experience what so many women do with hospital birth. I arrived fully dilated but no baby coming out because of a cervical lip. I didn’t know at that time that I just needed to stay it out, that it wasn’t dangerous. But we were first-timers and we went to the hospital after two hours of no baby coming out. It hurt, I was tired, our witness was scared. I do know now that I could have birthed Artan at poorhouse, but I am also now a witness to the culture of Birth Rape. That is definitely what I would call the first time for me, as I had to refuse nitric oxide gas with every contraction (presumably it was to shut me up. ) and I was also being threatened with harsh and surgery. I was forced to birth on my coccyx in stirrups, which is a holy hell of its own kind. From that experience, I will forever work toward changing how birthing women are treated. We waited years to be bright for our second child, and that had a lot to do with the first birth experience. I needed to heal and learn and to forgive myself for not providing Artan with all his blood (his cord was cut immediately) and for our bonding being stricken by the induction of his placenta (my nipples were flattened). I had to process, because I knew I wanted to birth at home the rest of my babies. So our second pregnancy began much the same as the first, where we knew we conceived and therefore wise a full ten months of pregnancy. Source: Bear Wisdom Family
